Free Security and Tools CD-ROM
As a weekly special, we are offering a free Security and Tools CDROM. to anyone who would like a security check done on their PC or Laptop.
The CDROM is available to anyone who would like one. It has a free security suite that we have developed because we have been using the programs for years and we trust their efficiency and their compatibility. The suite is completely free for home users, and all updates are free.
This CD-ROM also includes OpenOffice.org version 3, which is fully compatible with all versions of Microsoft Office and comes completely free of charge. The other programs on the CD are Trillian Instant Messenger, VLC Media Player, two popular decompression programs and a desktop search program that searches for files as you type - no waiting for search results. The programs have been tested on systems from Windows XP to Windows 7.
We recommend saving all downloaded programs to a folder marked "downloads". Most computers have more than one hard drive so choose a location that is not on the windows drive. i.e. instead of c:\My Documents\Downloads use d:\My Documents\Downloads. To make a new folder in Windows, go to your desired location, for example "My Documents" and right click with your mouse in a vacant space in the folder. Highlight "new" by hovering your mouse over the word new. Highlight "folder" by hovering your mouse over the word folder. Left click on the word folder and enter the name downloads. If you accidentally open the the folder "new folder", click the back button and right click on the folder "new folder" and highlight "rename". Left click the word rename and name your new folder downloads.

AVG Antivirus Free Edition: This is one of the best antivirus programs on the market. According to avtest.org, the leading security software testing body, it out performed a lot of paid antivirus services including Trend Micro and Panda in recent months. It also is not heavy on system resources such as processor and RAM which Symantec products tend to be. It scored a 5/5 in the cnet.com review paying special homage to the link scanner.
A couple of issues that we have with AVG is that you can not rely on its anti-spyware feature. The other issue with it is that occasionally you have to do a manual update because AVG needs special permission to install major updates. |

Sunbelt Personal Firewall: We trust this firewall and have been using it for years. Once Sunbelt, one of firewallguide.com's top four, is set up, although a tad tricky, it is set and forget. This program offers full control of everything and tells you which program is accessing the internet, and at what speed. That is what you need in a firewall. Sunbelt offers a fully featured program for a month and then every so often, it asks you if you would like to buy the full version, if this happens just click "cancel". We have never needed to buy the full version and we do not expect that you will either. |

Malwarebytes Anti-Spyware: This is one of the best and most downloaded anti-spyware programs available for free on the internet. In a cnet.com review it scored 4.5/5 in the editor's review, reporting it simple to use and low on system resources. The free version offers great protection but the continual scanning of your system and internet usage is restricted to the paid version. |

OpenOffice.Org 3: Microsoft Office has long been established as a necessary tool for both home and office. Unfortunately, though, it is really expensive. A lot of home users just want to write a few letters occasionally and the kids need something for their school projects.
To purchase Microsoft Word separately will cost you at least $365 via the internet. To buy a basic Microsoft Office package with word, excel, outlook, and powerpoint will cost at least $644.
OpenOffice is made by Sun Systems, the same people who produce Java - one of the internet's most used programs. For basic office functions OpenOffice.org 3 is quite sufficient. It has its own versions of word, excel, publisher, access and powerpoint which have a very similar interface to most Microsoft Office products. It will also open Microsoft's new docx format but you can not save files as docx though. |

Trillian 4 Astra: We had already decided to include Trillian 3 in our toolbox because it has been a bit of a sleeping giant as far as an instant messaging service is concerned. It is un-invasive, efficient and cross-platform to include msn, yahoo, gmail, and aim.
When we received a message informing us that the testing release version of Trillian 4 code named "Astra" had been announced. We downloaded it and ran some tests. The first thing that we noticed is that the new version has included facebook as part of its lineup. Installing the software was quite simple and easy to understand. It's new functionality is more detailed (including message headers when reporting new emails). It also covers a lot more ground where programs are concerned. It also looks a great deal better than it's previous version did. As a test we created 4 different email accounts and a facebook account for SeeCureIT and imported them into Trillian Astra. We had very little trouble and were able to use the accounts immediately. We are now able to have one group of accounts for work and one group for home in two different sign on's.
Trillian's functionality also extends to pop3, imap, Skype, Twitter, icq, and JibberJabber. Click on the image to the left for a larger view. |

Everything Search Engine: This is a really fast search facility that is one of the best we have ever seen, scoring a 4/5 in the cnet.com's editors rating and a whopping 4.5/5 in the user rating. Everything gives you instant results and uses very little resources.
When we first started testing Windows 7 at the start of the year we were not impressed with the search facility that Microsoft provided. The search program claims to "index" files, which basically means that it records all files into a saved list, this list is then kept for later searches so it can generate results really fast.
We tested Windows search looking for a word document on our Windows 7 machine. Our test was to search a word document that had been there for a few months. Our computer has more than the recommended specifications for running Windows 7. The hard drive is 2 x 300 GB, which is a modest size as far as today's new computers go. The results were that it took Windows search 10 minutes without finding a result. We narrowed the search to a 50GB section (My Documents), after another 10 minutes without finding a result, it did find 179 other non related results. We narrowed it down again. We then searched our personal folder (25GB), success at last!. Instantly Windows Search found the file we were after. The file and search parameters should then be indexed by Windows so further searches for that file should be instantaneous. I then searched for the file again in the whole computer wiht no result so after 10 minutes we gave up.
We performed the same search with Everything Search Engine. The results are shown as you type, so Everything found the file that we were looking for and in every single location that it occurred. The difference between the two is that the Microsoft Search indexes every single word and file on the computer, so searching takes a lot longer. Everything Search Engine only searches file names and locations, which is 90% of what you are going to do anyway.

VLC Media Player: Every so often you find a program that is outstanding, VLC is one of those programs. It is not often that you find a media player that will be completely cross platform where which VLC is. You can set it as your default program for playing everything and it will. Cnet.com's editor rated the program as a 4.5/5 and we totally agree with the verdict.
VLC continues to offer robust support for a wide range of video and audio formats, including OGG, WAV, MP2, MPG, MPEG, MP3, MP4, DivX, and QuickTime MOV. HD codecs like AES3, Raw Dirac, are covered and even support for playing back zipped files. |

Quick Zip 4: Scoring a whopping 5 / 5 in Cnet's review this is a powerful yet flexible zip utility. It covers most zip applications and we found the program easy to use and completely free, which is the most important factor that we look for when recommending software.
Cnet's editor says "Quick Zip compresses well and fast. It offers more options than even power users will regularly use. However, it's drag-and-drop default operation will attract inexperienced users. This freeware deserves a test by anyone looking for a robust and useful compression tool". |

WinRAR: The other decompression program is WinRAR. This does what Quickzip does but in a slightly different format and way. WinRAR also has a function that allows you to right click any zip file and unzip with just one click, that is why we have included both programs on the disk. |
